Cumberland Farms SmartPay: 10¢ a Gallon, Every Day

Cumberland Farms SmartPay takes 10¢ off every gallon, every day, and it costs nothing to join. The condition is the whole story: you have to pay with a linked checking account. Pay with a credit or debit card and you get no everyday fuel discount at all.

The program's own FAQ site is blunt about it. The 10¢ applies "whenever you pay with your checking account (ACH)," and "Customers who pay with another payment method (e.g., credit/debit cards) receive no everyday fuel discount."

How to sign up

Free. Download the Cumberland Farms app, tap Sign Up, and give a phone number, email and password. Then complete the free enrollment that links a checking account — that is the step that switches on the fuel discount. You can also do it at getsmartrewards.com/enroll.

No membership fee appears anywhere in the chain's own materials.

The welcome offer

New members get 20¢ a gallon off their first five fill-ups, plus five free Farmhouse chips, trail mix or chocolate items and five free coffee, fountain or frozen drinks (one free item per day). Welcome rewards expire 60 days after you enroll.

Note that the 20¢ welcome offer and the standing 10¢ do not combine. They run one after the other.

How to stack it

Not much, and the reason is structural. The discount requires paying over the SmartPay ACH rail, so you cannot also pay with a rewards credit card on that transaction. A card's gas-category bonus and the 10¢ are mutually exclusive. That follows from the published payment gate rather than from an explicit anti-stacking clause, but the effect at the pump is the same.

Work out which is worth more to you. At $4.00 a gallon, a card paying 3% on gas returns 12¢ a gallon, which beats SmartPay's 10¢. At $3.00 a gallon the same card returns 9¢, and SmartPay wins.

Nothing is published about cashback apps.

The points are separate

A second currency runs alongside the fuel discount: 1 point per gallon pumped and 1 point per dollar spent in store, with a $1 reward for every 25 points. There is also a free coffee or fountain drink for every 80 gallons bought through the app.

Watch-outs

There are daily and weekly ceilings, and they are in dollars, not gallons. Linked-checking SmartPay members are capped at 7 transactions and $150 a day, and 35 transactions and $500 a week. At current prices $150 is roughly 35 gallons, so one big fill plus a second errand can run you into the daily limit.

Where it works. Cumberland Farms publishes "more than 575 store locations" in Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, New York, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. The chain is part of EG America, whose wider portfolio runs other banners — the SmartPay terms here are specific to Cumberland Farms.

Member price vs. the sign price

Same sign for everyone. The chain's published language is a rollback at authorization: the "Discount is automatically applied at the pump when you pay with a linked checking account." Non-members, and members paying by card, transact at the posted street price.
