Exxon Mobil Rewards+ : What the Points Are Worth Per Gallon

Exxon Mobil Rewards+ is free, and it earns 3 points per gallon of regular and 6 points per gallon of premium. Points are worth about a cent each, so the program on its own is roughly 3¢ a gallon on regular and 6¢ on premium.

Exxon is unusual in publishing the full stack and its ceiling. Layer on Direct Debit+, AARP and Frequent Filler and Exxon states members "can earn up to 20¢ per gallon" — 20¢ on premium, 15¢ on regular.

How the points convert

From Exxon's own terms: "you will generally receive savings of at least one cent for each Point you use. For example, 100 Points will generally allow you receive at least $1.00 in savings." You need at least 100 points before you can use any.

Earning: 3 points per gallon of regular, 6 per gallon of premium (Synergy Supreme+), and 2 points per $1 on qualifying convenience-store purchases or car washes.

How to sign up

Free. Exxon's terms: "There is no cost to join Exxon Mobil Rewards+." Enroll on the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ website, in the app, or by phone at 1-888-Reward+ (1-888-739-2730). You have to complete enrollment before points can be used.

At the pump or register, present your Rewards+ Identifier — the digital card in the app, your enrolled phone number, or a physical card.

How to stack it

Exxon publishes the four layers and what each is worth, which almost no other chain does:

Direct Debit+ is the big one, and it is a bank link. It pays 10¢ to 12¢ a gallon as instant savings rather than points, which is three times what the loyalty program alone returns.

The Smart Card+ credit card is presented as an alternative payment method rather than a fifth layer on top. It gives an immediate cents-per-gallon rollback, though the amount is not published on the pages we checked.

Nothing is published either permitting or prohibiting cashback apps.

Watch-outs

Points expire on a calendar, not a rolling clock. Exxon's terms: "On December 31 of each year, any Points that are at least one (1) year old will expire." The FAQ restates it as points earned this calendar year expiring on 31 December of next year. Points earned in January therefore last almost two years; points earned in December last one.

Frequent Filler's requirement is stated two different ways. Exxon's terms page says it is "achieved by purchasing at least 100 gallons of fuel in a calendar month." Exxon's marketing page renders the same tier as 100 gallons of Supreme+ premium. Those are very different bars. We follow the terms page until Exxon resolves it, but do not plan a month of premium fills around either version.

AARP and Frequent Filler pay in points, not cash off. Each adds 1 point per gallon at the pump, plus store bonuses: AARP adds 1 point per $1 in store, Frequent Filler adds 2.

No general gallon cap was published in the terms we checked. Individual promotions carry their own — a published Houston Texans offer, for example, caps at 30 gallons per member account per offer period.

Member price vs. the sign price

Same sign for everyone. Points are earned against, and savings applied to, the price at the pump after you present your Rewards+ Identifier. Direct Debit+ is described as "instant savings" off that same price.
