At a Glance: Safeway/Albertsons Rewards Key Terms
Program Name
Safeway for U / Albertsons for U — one free loyalty program shared across Albertsons Companies' grocery banners — whose Points feed a Gas Rewards balance redeemable at company-owned fuel centers and at partner fuel stations (Chevron and Texaco; Exxon and Mobil for the Northeast banners). FreshPass is a separate paid subscription that changes point expiry.
Cost to Join
Free. Safeway's own program page states "No purchase is required to become a Program Member." Join in-store, on the banner website, or in the banner app; the account is identified at the pump by the registered phone number. FreshPass is a separate paid subscription whose only fuel-relevant published benefit here is that Points stop expiring.
State Footprint
Albertsons Companies disclosed 2,240 retail stores, 1,708 in-store pharmacies and 408 associated fuel centers across 35 states and the District of Columbia as of June 20, 2026, operating 22 banners including Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw's, ACME, Tom Thumb, Randalls, United Supermarkets, Pavilions, Star Market, Haggen, Carrs, Kings Food Markets and Balducci's. The Safeway banner is concentrated in the West (California, the Pacific Northwest, the Mountain states, Alaska and Hawaii) plus the Mid-Atlantic and parts of the Northeast; the company is closing some stores in 2026 following the failed Kroger merger, so store counts move.

Safeway and Albertsons run one free program, for U, and every 100 points you earn on groceries takes 10¢ off a gallon. The ceiling is $1.00 a gallon on up to 25 gallons — but only at a fuel station the company owns.

That split is the thing to understand before you drive anywhere. At a partner station, the same points are capped at 20¢ a gallon. Save up 1,000 points and take them to a Chevron and you will get 20¢, not a dollar.

How the ladder works

From Safeway's own program details: earn 1 point per $1 on groceries and 2 points per $1 on gift cards. "Every 100 Points equals 10 cents off per gallon at participating owned and partner fuel stations."

So the ladder runs 100 points for 10¢, 200 for 20¢, 500 for 50¢, and 1,000 for $1.00 — with the partner ceiling at 20¢ and the owned-station ceiling at $1.00. Savings are limited to 25 gallons for one vehicle per transaction.

How to sign up

Free. Safeway's program page states "No purchase is required to become a Program Member." Join in store, on your banner's website, or in the banner app.

At the pump: "you must establish eligibility by entering the phone number used to register your forU account before pumping fuel." Points become usable about an hour after you earn them, and the system automatically applies the highest reward available.

How to stack it

The internal stack is the point pool. Grocery, pharmacy and gift-card spending all feed one per-gallon discount.

The partner network is large. Chevron and Texaco honor grocery-earned rewards up to 20¢ a gallon. Safeway, ACME, Shaw's and Star Market shoppers can also redeem at roughly 1,500 Exxon and Mobil stations across Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington, DC.

The Chevron stack runs one direction only. Chevron's own station-support page states that Chevron and Texaco Rewards can be combined with grocery Gas Rewards — but rewards earned in Chevron Texaco Rewards cannot be redeemed at Safeway fuel stations. Bring grocery points to Chevron, not the other way around.

Nothing is published about cashback apps.

Watch-outs

Points expire fast, and the wording is easy to misread. "Unused Points will expire within two calendar months, including the month they are earned." Points earned in January last until the end of February. That is roughly a 30-to-60-day window depending on when in the month you shopped.

FreshPass stops the clock. Points do not expire for FreshPass subscribers. That is the only fuel-relevant benefit of the paid subscription, and whether it is worth paying for depends on how often your points lapse.

Save for the big redemption, but only if you can reach a company station. The gap between the 20¢ partner cap and the $1.00 owned-station cap is the single biggest decision on this page.

Where it works. Member price vs. the sign price

Same sign for everyone. Enter your for U phone number before fueling and the discount applies against the posted price, on up to 25 gallons for one vehicle.
