Thorntons Gas Discount: Refreshing Rewards, and What We Can't Confirm

Thorntons' Refreshing Rewards is free, and C-Store Dive, 19 May 2023, reports it at 5¢ a gallon every day plus weekly Flash Fuel offers worth up to 20¢. We could not confirm either figure on a Thorntons page, so treat both as one trade outlet's reporting from 2023, not a current chain statement.

What Thorntons does state plainly is the rule that catches people out: you have to claim a reward in the app before you pump. Rewards are not applied automatically to your next fill.

The 35-gallon cap comes from the same 2023 C-Store Dive report and is likewise unconfirmed. mythorntons.com refused connections throughout our checks, which is why this page reads more cautiously than the rest of the site.

What Thorntons itself publishes

The chain's own FAQ is clear on mechanics even where it is silent on numbers:

• "All of our special offers and discounts require our Refreshing Rewards mobile app."
• "A consumer must choose to claim their rewards for any of the listed options. The rewards are not applied to your next fuel purchase. You may redeem points for rewards in the convenience store or at the pump at participating Thornton's Locations."
• On redeeming at the pump: "An alternate ID is the phone number you assign to your Refreshing Rewards account that you can enter at the pump or cash register before you make a purchase instead of swiping a physical RR card so that you receive your fuel discount."

Thorntons also warns that offers differ between members: "Our fuel discounts often change in the amount of discount and how often they are sent," and "We group our rewards members periodically." So a friend's offer is not evidence of yours.

How to sign up

Free. Refreshing Rewards keychain cards are handed out at the checkout counter and registered in the app or at refreshingrewards.com, or you can create a virtual account with no physical card.

Registration needs a card number or virtual sign-up, a 4-digit PIN, an alternate ID (your phone number), and a valid email address. Thorntons notes the email is required to receive weekly offers, so a throwaway address defeats the point of joining.

New registrants are enrolled automatically in FREEquency Clubs.

This part is verified on the chain's own site. Buy 6 get the 7th free, or buy 9 get the 10th free, on named beverage and snack clubs. Earned club rewards are valid for 14 days.

How to stack it

Thorntons publishes the strictest anti-stacking rule of any chain we cover, and it is worth quoting exactly: "Refreshing Rewards offers and discounts do not stack with other discounts, such as Gas Buddy cards."

Cutting the other way: Thorntons is a bp subsidiary, and bp's own Amazon Prime page states the combined earnify plus Prime 10¢ a gallon saving applies at "bp, Amoco, and participating ampm and Thorntons locations." So earnify-side savings do reach participating Thorntons sites.

How the two programs interact at a single Thorntons pump is not stated anywhere, and we are not going to guess. If you hold both, ask inside.

Watch-outs

The banner looks to be mid-transition. Refreshing Rewards terms are administered under bp, and bp lists participating Thorntons locations as earnify sites. Program terms may move.

A tier structure was reportedly retired. CSP Daily News and Convenience Store News report that the old Welcome, Premium and VIP tiers were discontinued so that all members with a valid email address are eligible for rewards including fuel discounts. Both sites refused our reader on 22 September 2026, so we could not re-read them or establish the effective date — the links are there for you to check.

Where it works. The same C-Store Dive report of 19 May 2023 puts Thorntons at more than 200 stores across six states: Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee. Not confirmed on a Thorntons page, and three years old.

Member price vs. the sign price

Same sign for everyone, as far as we can tell. The FAQ describes entering an alternate ID or scanning a card "before you make a purchase ... so that you receive your fuel discount." If a site is running under bp's earnify, bp's published answer governs: "The price will be the same as if you were to pay at the pump or in the convenience store."
